Many, many things were rationed. Food was the biggest probably, but all metals, rubber, fuels. Basically anything that could be needed for the war effort was either rationed or in very short supply and expensive. Even things like housing was in short supply because little new construction was going on because of the lack of materials or the lack of skilled tradesmen or simply due to the lack of cash. Many recycling drives were held everywhere for things like, tires and old cans and paper and even ladies silk stockings which were turned into parachutes and gun powder bags to fire the large artillery guns. Most people complained but also most were more than willing to help the war effort where and when they could.
