John's Gospel was loosely based on Luke's Gospel, which was in turn based on Mark's Gospel, while there are good grounds for believing that Matthew, also based on Mark, was written some time before Luke. Thus, John was the last New Testament gospel to be written, and is dated to the early decades of the second century.

∙ 13y agoThe Gospel According to Saint John is almost universally considered to be the last New Testament to be written. Conservative Christians say that it was written in the fifties or later in the first century, while many scholars say that it was really written well into the second century CE.

∙ 13y agoIt is almost universally accepted that John's Gospel was the last New Testament gospel to be written. Internal evidence shows that it was inspired by Luke's Gospel, which was written around the end of the first century, so John's Gospel would have been written early in the second century.
Gospels that are not included in the New Testament continued to be written throughout the second century, often in the names of the early apostles.
