Elected, but non democratic government. The rulers of the emirates are normally elected from the ruling bloodline of the country.

The UAE legally follows a Federal system of government, with each emirate having autonomy to make changes to the Federal guidelines - for example is some emirates the death penalty is still handed down for certain offences, where as in other emirates the same offence carries life imprisonment.

The government in UAE is a monarchy. The emirates are ruled by sheikhs and sheikhas (which are essentially kings and queens). Abu Dhabi is ruled by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed (who also is the ruler of the country). The crown prince of Abu Dhabi (kind of like the vice president in America) is HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, brother of Sheikh Khalifa.
