Using a 4-point scale, an A=4, B=3, C=2 and D=1. Any combination of class grades are added up and then divided by the number of classes.

If you had 5 classes, and the grades were A, B, B, C, B, then the corresponding numbers would be 4, 3, 3, 2, 3. This would add up to 14. If you divide 14 by the number of classes (5) that would be a 3.0 GPA (grade point average).

If you got the following grades instead, B, C, C, D, B, that would be 3-2-2-1-3, which totals to 11. 11 divided by 5 classes is 2.2 GPA.

Is it possible for a 6th grader to plan what classes he or she wants to take from grades 7-12?

It really depends on your state and county. You can take a look at the curriculum and classes offered for the higher grades, but classes are always changing, so there is no guarantee that you'll get the classes you choose now. You also might think you are going to take a specific level, but change your mind after a couple of years.

Mainly the commutative property. But the fact that 30*8*7 is unambiguous and you do not need to write (30*8)*7 or 30*(8*7) is due to the associative property.
