The dinoflagellates are the group of protists that can glow in the dark or cause toxic red tides. The majority of them are marine plankton.

Red tide is caused by an overabundance of specific protists, which infect bodies of water, making the water red. Red tide is extremely harmful to humans, as well as different marine animals.
Algal can cause "red tides". Specifically algal blooms.
Because they are parasitical. The plasmodium protists causes Malaria by invading red blood cells for its nutrition.

Protist are different from Bacteria because bacteria can be helpful and harmful but protist cause red tides so its just plain harmful. : = }
Red tides are caused by the overgrowth of certain types of algae. Red tides are toxic, killing marine life as well as making humans who have eaten seafood which has been in the contaminated water sick.
