They both have their ups and downs, as well as their intended users.

Advantages of the M4:

  • Better accuracy
  • Lighter weight
  • Lighter cartridge, allowing more ammunition to be carried
  • Aluminum receivers are not prone to rust the way steel receivers are
  • More controllable in burst or full auto fire
  • Ergonomics
  • Modularity

Advantages of the AK-47/AKM:

  • Simpler design allows personnel to familiarise themselves with the weapon quickly
  • Loose tolerances increase resistance to jamming, although at the expense of accuracy
  • Gas piston operating system
  • More powerful cartridge used
  • Much easier to maintain

The AR platform and the AK platform both have 'fans' who tend to rabidly proclaim their favourite rifle to be the greatest, and who tend to overstate the weaknesses of the other platform. AR enthusiasts have a tendency to overstate the inaccuracy of the AK, and AK fans tend to claim that the AR platform jams all the time (which, after three combat tours using an M4, I'd be very quick to dispute). They also overstate the capabilities of the one they favour the most. For example, a common myth about the AK is that it never jams and never needs any sort of maintenance. This is entirely false - the AK uses not only a steel barrel, but a steel receiver and internals, which are just as prone to rusting as any other steel is. The AK is not jam proof, as many like to claim, either, with it's Achilles' Heel being the gap which exposes the inner workings of the rifle when the selector lever is in the firing position.
