What guns do SWAT carry?

Added: I'm sure the first answer is probably correct for the department or agency the writer is famiar with - however the equipment used and carried by SWAT teams can vary greatly from department to department, agency to agency, and state to state.

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams generally exist to employ specialized tactics and weapons unavailable to the average patrol officer. Most SWAT team officers are armed with their duty pistol and a long gun, such as a Colt M4 or a submachine gun such as an HK MP5. Some specialized team members may be deployed as snipers with high precision, bolt action rifles such as the Remington 700 or Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifle. Other officers may be armed with small caliber weapons (.22 caliber rifles) for dispatching animals and destroying lights that may compromise their position or specialized shotguns for breaching doors. Specific brands and models vary widely and almost all major firearms manufacturers produce a weapon employed by a tactical team.

S.W.A.T. or Special Weapons and Tactics use a variety of weapons based on environment and task. Anything from M14 carbines used in sniper role to MP5 submachine guns. Most armories will also keep M16s, M4s, and a variety of shotguns. As well as a variety of weapons S.W.A.T. will also use a variety of ammunition. Most prevalent in this is shot shells, including slugs to buck shot to rubber pellets. The role of side arm is FAR to varied to speculate on but will generally be some form of 9mm or .45 caliber pistol.

Every SWAT team doesn't use the same firearms. Most teams will have access to AR-15 or M16 rifles, shotguns, and in some cases other types of machine guns. Snipers will have long range high powered rifles.

It varies from department to department. Generally speaking they will have some sort of assault rifle/sub machine gun. A side arm (The LA swat is well known for being one of the few non military bureaus to cary Colt 1911pistols). Stun grenades are another common SWAT arm. Most carry a knife, once again the type depends on the department.

In addition to weapons almost all SWAT officers will have military tactical vests (Generally MOLLY) and kevlar.
