First of all - tHe engine will stop as soon as you disconnect the battery. Secondly - you risk being electrocuted if you do that !

If you are careful and do not let the positive cable to the alternator come in contact with the motor or frame, nothing will happen. It is just a lot easier and safer to disconnect the positive cable from the battery. It saves possibly shorting out the cable and possible ruining the battery.

Apart from a chance that the battery may get knocked out of place and make the PSP switch off, nothing special will happen. The cover is there to keep the battery in place - if it's not there, the battery may get dislodged.

No. If you have enough power for the engine to crank then it has enough power to run the other systems. ALSO..i've started a car with a good battery and replaced it with "unknown battery" and it has stalled the motor. Starter and everything was good. Technically, even if the battery is dead and all other systems are normal this shouldn't happen. Go figure.
