Few people realize that there were actually two horses that have portrayed Silver on film and on television. Silver #1 was a 12 year old, Morab Tennessee Walking Horse cross stallion over 17 hands tall who was chosen personally by Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger) himself in 1949 for use on the television series just prior to its launch. His real name was "White Cloud" or from some sources, "Traveler". He did not know many tricks, but was very gentle and had an impressively high rear which became the hallmark of this dynamic duo. Silver #1 came from the Hugh Hooker Ranch in the San Fernando Valley of California.
In 1949, the owner of the Lone Ranger Television show, George W. Trendle purchased a four year old Morab Saddlebred cross by the name of "Tarzen's White Banner" from a farm in Peoria, Illinois. He immediately renamed and registered the horse, "Hi-Yo Silver". In 1952 "Hi-Yo Silver" was shipped from Illinois to California and became Silver #2 taking the place of Silver #1 in the television series while John Hart briefly stepped into the role of The Lone Ranger. Silver #2 was trained by the famous trainer and handler, Glenn Randall who also trained Roy Roger's Trigger. Silver #2 had an opposite temperament from the first Silver being a high strung stallion who was quite skittish of camera sounds.
The Lone Ranger had one horse. His name was Silver. He was gray(also known as white). I hope this helps you. As written in wikipedia.."According to "The Legend of Silver", a radio episode broadcast September 30, 1938, before acquiring Silver the Lone Ranger rode a chestnut mare called Dusty. After Dusty was killed by a criminal that Reid and Tonto were tracking, Reid saved Silver's life from an enraged buffalo, and in gratitude Silver chose to give up his wild life to carry him. Silver's sire was called Sylvan, and his dam was Musa."
The horse was always referred to as "Silver". He was a white Horse, poetic license- white and silver are the same in heraldry.
Actually the horse was called "Silver" because that is what color he was on TV - during the black & white era!
Extra Credit:
The Long Rangers name in the series was actually John Reid and Reid was a Texas Ranger.
Tonto's horse was named "Scout"!
The Back Story:
The Lone Ranger was one of six Texas Rangers who were ambushed while chasing a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. After the battle, 5 Texas Rangers were killed and one - the "Lone Ranger" was wounded but survived, and was discovered by Tonto, a Native American who recognized the Survivor as Texas Ranger John Reid, the man who had saved his life only months earlier!! The Long Rangers horse was named "Silver". Tonto thereafter referred to the ranger as "kemo sabe," which is translated as "trusty scout." Tonto's horse was named "Scout". After Tonto helped him regain his strength, the ranger vowed to hide his identity from Cavendish and to dedicate his life to "making the West a decent place to live." He and Tonto dug an extra grave to fool Cavendish into believing all six rangers had died, and the ranger donned a mask to protect his identity as the single surviving ranger. Only Tonto knows who he really was.
When the series ended, The Lone Range never caught Cavendish - and actors Jay Silverheels (Tonto) and Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger) offered to do a final episode for FREE - just to catch Cavendish - the network would hear none of it! Moore played the Lone Ranger from 1949 to 1957. John Hart played the Lone Ranger from 1952 to 1954 because of a wage dispute with Clayton Moore! People DEMANDED that Moore return as the Masked Man. It was the only role he ever played as an actor!
