Best Answer

When air is allowed to expand, it cools, and when it is compressed, it warms.

Additional Information: Contraction, like compression is shrinkage that can actually be caused by cooling and should not be confused with compression.

To expand any gas some amount of work has to be done to separate the molecules far from one another which increases internal energy of gas and temperature rises. It is only true if pressure is constant.

Describe what happens to air temperature when work is done on the air to compress it?

Yes. As the molecules become closer, the collisions increase, increasing temperature.

What is the definition of turbo jet engine?

Turbojets consist of an air inlet, an air compressor, a combustion chamber, a gas turbine (that drives the air compressor) and a nozzle. The air is compressed into the chamber, heated and expanded by the fuel combustion and then allowed to expand out through the turbine into the nozzle where it is accelerated to high speed to provide propulsion.

Is it possible for an air mass to change in temperature if no heat is added or subtracted?

Not only possible but a certainty that it will change in temperature.

What is the study of compressed air?

compressed air science

Which categories is usage of compressed air and gas divided into?

The three major categories of usage for compressed air and gas are: compressed air and gas for process services, compressed air for power, and compressed air for general industrial applications.

How does a turbojet provide power to aircraft?

A turbojet consists of an air inlet, an air compressor, a combustion chamber, a gas turbine and a nozzle. Through this constructions, the turbojets provide power to an aircraft when the air is compressed into the chamber, heated and expanded by the fuel combustion and then allowed to expand out through the turbine into the nozzle where it is accelerated to high speed to provide propulsion.

What happens when compressed air is suddenly let out like a puncture of a can?

You could get a couple of results. If the can is not secure it will probably become a projectile if the released air can overcome it's weight. The second thing that will happen is the compressed air will rapidly expand causing it to cool. That is how the compressor on an air conditioner works. Compression, then rapid expansion cools.

What is the purpose of a compressed air dryer?

A compressed air dryer is used to remove water vapor from compressed air. Compressed air dryers are used mostly in commercial and industrial facilities.

What do compressed air dryers do?

A compressed air dryer is a device for removing water vapor from compressed air. Compressed air dryers are commonly found in a wide range of industrial and commercial facilities.
