What happened during Ralph's speech after Jack steals the fire in Lord of the Flies chapter 8?

After Ralph had told the rest of the boys to sit down and had mentioned that Jack and some of his tribe had raided them for a fire he paused. To quote from the book "Ralph was puzzled by the shutter that flickered in his brain. There was something he wanted to say; then the shutter had come down." This wasn't the first time that Ralph had lost track of what he was saying, as a curtain fluttered or wings flapped in his mind. He seems to have been suffering from Petit Mal epilepsy. People who suffer from this complaint characteristically experience 'absences.'
