What happened in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?

Harry is left on the doorstep of his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon's house. Ten years later he begins receiving strange letters that his uncle destroys before he has a chance to read them. On his eleventh birthday a half-giant named Rubeus Hagrid arrives to give Harry his letter and tells him that he is a wizard.

Harry starts his magical education at Hogwarts where he becomes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Together they discover that the evil wizard Lord Voldemort is trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone so he can return to power. They work together to save the stone and defeat Voldemort.

We are introduced to Vernon Dursley, his wife Petunia and their infant son Dudley who pride themselves on being a normal family. On Vernon's journey to work one morning he begins to notice several strange things. First is the cat that appears to be reading his street sign and won't move. Next are the people in cloaks wandering around and then he hears some of these people whispering about the Potter's. At home, Vernon watches the news and hears about more strange occurrences which lead him to believe that it might have something to do with his wife's sister, Lily Potter. Eventually the Dursley's retire to bed, Vernon thinking that it even if it had something to do with the Potter's it wouldn't affect him.

Outside, a woman named McGonagall (the cat who wouldn't move) and Dumbledore discuss the recent events. Dumbledore confirms that Lily and James Potter were murdered by Lord Voldemort, but that their infant son Harry somehow survived and destroyed Voldemort in the process. Rubeus Hagrid arrives with Harry and they leave him on the Dursleys doorstep as they are the only family he has left.

Ten years later, Harry is miserable living with the Dursleys who mistreat him in favour of their own son. On Dudley's eleventh birthday Harry accidentally releases a snake at the zoo. A month later, Harry begins receiving letters from an unknown sender. The Dursleys go to extreme measures to prevent him from reading these letters and eventually hire a shack to spend the night in. Hagrid arrives shortly after midnight, on Harry's eleventh birthday, and tells him that he is a wizard. The letter invites Harry to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The Dursleys try to prevent him from going, but Hagrid is shocked that they not only didn't tell Harry he was a wizard, but lied about how his parents died. Harry discovers his parents were murdered and that he is famous in the wizarding world. The next morning, he is taken to Diagon Alley to purchase things he needs to school and is shocked to discover that everybody knows him. In Diagon Alley, Hagrid takes Harry to Gringotts bank and visits another vault where he removes a secret item for Dumbledore.

Another month passes and Harry Potter takes the train to Hogwarts. He becomes friends with Ron Weasley who introduced him to the wizarding world. Both boys are sorted into Gryffindor house. Harry also meets Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle who are in Slytherin house and who they don't get along with.

Harry soon discovers that Severus Snape, his Potions teacher, doesn't like him but can't figure out why. Hagrid brushes it off but Harry feels like there is something he isn't being told. Then he sees a newspaper cutting that says Gringotts was broken into shortly after Hagrid was there. When he mentions this Hagrid gets very flustered, leading Harry to believe that the thief was after the item Hagrid removed.

During his flying lesson, one of Harry's classmates, Neville Longbottom, falls off his broomstick. While the teacher is away Draco steals Neville's remembrall flies off with Harry chasing after him, managing to spectacularly catch the ball in the air. This was witnessed by McGonagall who offers Harry a place on the Quidditch team.

Shocked that Harry wasn't expelled, Draco challenges him to a midnight duel. Hermione Granger catches Harry and Ron sneaking out of the common room and follows them trying to stop them breaking the rules. However, she finds herself locked out of the common room. They then stumble upon Neville Longbottom who was also locked out. Soon, they are forced to run when they discover the school caretaker looking for them. Draco never intended to meet them and simply wanted them to be caught out of bed. Whilst hiding, they find themselves in the out of bounds third floor corridor and find the three-headed dog, Fluffy. Once back in the common room, Hermione informs them that the dog was standing on a trap door. Harry concludes that the package Hagrid removed from Gringotts is being guarded under there and decides to try and find out what it is.

After their Charms class, Ron insults Hermione who overhears and hides in the girls bathroom. When a troll is released in the school Harry and Ron decide to go save Hermione and they become good friends.

On a visit to Hagrid they mention the three-headed dog and he tells them that it is called Fluffy and belongs to him. When asked what is under the trap door, Hagrid tells them that is between Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel, so the friends start trying to figure out who Flamel is.

For Christmas, Harry is given his father's invisibility cloak and when wandering around the castle discovers the Mirror of Erised, which shows his heart's desire - his family. Dumbledore finds him and tells him that looking into the mirror makes people unhappy and so he is moving the mirror.

The trio also discover that Hagrid has a dragon's egg which he is hatching in his hut. Dragon's are illegal and the three try to convince him to get rid of it, but the dragon soon hatches and they are roped into helping him with it. Draco Malfoy spies on them and sees the dragon, so they contact Ron's brother Charlie who works with dragons and arrange for it to be picked up. However, Harry and Hermione accidentally leave the invisibility cloak at the top of the tower and are caught wandering around the corridors at night. Draco, who tipped the teachers off, and Neville who was trying to warn them, are also caught and given detention.

The four serve detention in the Forbidden Forest where they help Hagrid find out who is hurting the unicorns. There Harry comes across Lord Voldemort but is saved by a Centaur.

They find out that Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Philosopher's Stone, a Stone that can make you immortal. Harry realises that Voldemort is trying to steal it. They believe he is using Snape to help him. Harry also discovers that the person who gave Hagrid the dragon's egg knows how to get past Fluffy and when Dumbledore is suddenly called away to the Ministry, Harry knows the Stone will be stolen that night.

Harry, Ron and Hermione go down the trapdoor and faces the challenges. Eventually Harry comes face to face with Lord Voldemort and his real assistant, Professor Quirrell who he shares a body with. The Mirror of Erised gives Harry the Stone, as a person who wants it but doesn't want to use it. Quirrell cannot touch Harry without receiving extreme burns due to a protection spell caused when Lily died for Harry. Therefore, he is able to keep the Stone out of Quirrell's hands until Dumbledore arrived. Quirrell died, Voldemort escaped and the Stone was destroyed.

Harry becomes fast friends with Ron, who gives him some information about the wizarding world. They then arrive at Hogwarts.

When Dudley's friend, Piers, saw that the snake was moving he called over Dudley who quickly shoved Harry out of the way. This caused Harry to accidentally perform magic. The glass disappeared allowing the snake to escape and leaving everybody in the reptile house in shock.

Harry Potter looks into the Mirror of Erised and is given the philosopher's stone. He tries to hide this from Professor Quirrell, but Lord Voldemort's voice tells Quirrell that Harry is lying and demands to speak to him.

Quirrell unwraps his turban and reveals Voldemort on the back of his head. Voldemort tries to convince Harry to join his cause and give him the stone. When Harry refuses, Voldemort orders Quirrell to get it. However, Quirrell cannot touch Harry due to Lily Potter's protective charm. Harry uses this to his advantage to keep himself and the stone safe until he passes out.

By this point, Quirrell is badly burned and Voldemort abandons him, leaving him to die. Albus Dumbledore arrives in time to save both Harry and the stone. When Harry awakes a few days later he is told that the philosopher's stone has been destroyed.
