Roosevelt spent a lot of time in Warm Springs, Georgia, at a polio hospital there. He felt at home among the other sufferers of the disease which had crippled him, and got some relief from the pressures in Washington. It was thought the waters of the naturally warm springs had some curative effect, but probably just helped relax muscles.
Roosevelt was in Warm Springs on April 12, 1945. In late morning he was sitting for a portrait artist, who was working, painting a portrait of him. He said "I have a terrific headache" and put his hand to his head, then fell unconscious. He died soon after. At his last physical his physicians found numerous very severe health conditions, any one of which had been likely to kill a man under the stress of leading the free world in a global war. Roosevelt died of a stroke less than a month before Germany surrendered. Many of the soldiers in the front lines were very young, 18-20 years old, and they could hardly remember any other president. They felt a deep sense of personal loss. Many newspapers were publishing every day a "casualty list" of the men reported dead from the day before in the war, and some put Roosevelt at the top of the list with the rank of "commander in chief" on April 13, in recognition that his constant worry over the war hastened his death. The Southern Railway put on its best crew to run the train that carried Roosevelt's body back to Washington, and citizens lined the tracks in every town along the way, and families stood by the tracks in the country when the train passed. Nothing like that had been seen since the train that carried Lincoln home after he was murdered.
