Although the inscription "proclaim liberty throughout all the land..." was on the bell at it's original casting (c.1750), the name "Liberty Bell" was popularized by abolitionists almost a hundred years later. The specific liberty must then refer to liberty from slavery.

Americas most famous bell is part famous because it is broken.Along time ago, people used bells to comunicate. They rang bells to announce births, deaths and special events. In 1752,a bell was hung in pennsylvannia state house. The first time the liberty bell was rung it cracked. So the bell was repaired. This time the bell made an irritating sound every time it was rang.So the bell was recast again. It rang for many other important events, including the first reading for indipendince on July 8,1776.But in 1835,when the bell rang to tell the death of chief justice john marshall,it cracked again. The bell was repaired and rang many more times.BUT perhaps the bell wasnt meant to ring because in 1846 while ringing to represent George washingtons birthday it cracked again.it has been silence ever since. Now the third bell hanges in independince hall in phillidelphia. Its second crack was never repaired. The 2,080-pound bell, made mostly of copper, receives over 1,000 million visitors every year
