Some, a few, were shot. By and large the bravery was astonishing. There were some mutinies, but given the hardships faced by many the fact that by far the vast majority undertook the work they did, of all nationalities, it is amazing that as many stood to as did. Certainly in previous conflicts the British had resorted to flogging soldiers, often for minor offences in many instances.
