Burroughs had been a minster in Salem, but had left and gone to Wells, Maine. He was brought back by authorities and imprisoned. He was found guilty. At his execution on August 19th, 1692, he recited the Lord's Prayer perfectly, something a witch supposedly couldn't do. The crowd wanted to release him but Cotton Mather talked them out of it. He died along with John Proctor, George Jacobs, John Willard and Martha Carrier.
Prior to the trials, Burroughs was the reverend in Salem Village from 1680 to 1683. Like all of the Village's reverend until after the trials, no one really liked him. Some really had it out for the minister. He was in Wells, Maine when the trials began in the winter of 1692. When open season was declared on anyone who might be a witch, those people who really disliked Burroughs accused him and had him taken back from Maine for trial in May, 1692. He was convicted in early August and executed on August 19, 1692. But before he was hanged, he flawlessly recited the Lord's Prayer. According to witch-lore, that was an impossibility for a witch. And because Cotton Mather didn't care in the slightest, Burroughs was killed anyway.
