It says on a different website, that you are supposed to believe Rainsford kills Zaroff.

∙ 13y agoIn the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, General Zaroff meets his demise when he becomes the prey in the "game" he has been playing with Rainsford. Rainsford outwits Zaroff and ends up killing him in self-defense. Ultimately, Zaroff becomes the hunted instead of the hunter.

Zaroff is killed by Rainsford.
General Zaroff is surprised to see Rainsford at the end of the story because he thought Rainsford had perished in their game of hunting humans. Zaroff was not expecting Rainsford to turn the tables on him and outsmart him in their deadly game.

We don't really know what happened to General Zaroff in the end. It is very unclear on how he died because his last words end in mid sentence. We can infer from this that Rainsford either stabbed him with something he was holding or he simply pushed him out of the window making him fall to his pack of hungry dogs.
Zaroff is killed by Rainsford.
At the beginning of "The Most Dangerous Game," Ivan is portrayed as a skilled and loyal servant to General Zaroff. By the end of the story, Ivan's loyalty leads to his demise as he falls victim to Zaroff's predatory game and is killed by Rainsford. Ivan undergoes a transformation from a silent and seemingly invincible servant to a tragic victim of the cruel game orchestrated by Zaroff.

Some how,some way Rainsford gets into Zaroff's bed room and hinds behind the curtain until Zaroff goes to "rest". Zaroff congratulates him telling Rainsford that he won the game, Rainsford kills Zaroff,which means Rainsford won and now is free to go.
