Christ's ministry and that of the Prophets had been so successful that thousands of His disciples, ordinary men and women had been convinced that He was indeed the Christ. This was not just through His words nor that of his prophets but the all convincing power of the Holy Spirit testifying to them that all that He taught was the truth. They could not denigh that He was indeed the son of the living God, the father of all mankind. So powerful had the Christian faith become that evil men began to use it for political gain. False priests and teachers set themselves up and began to corrupts Christs teachings.
The four New Testament gospels were actually written anonymously and only attributed to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John later in the second century, when the Church Fathers sought to establish who probably wrote each of the gospels. However, New Testament scholars say there is no good reason to accept those attributions and that none of the gospels could have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed. To establish who really had the teachings of Jesus, we need to establish where the four unknown evangelists got their information to write the gospels.
New Testament scholars have also established that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke were substantially based on Mark's Gospel. John was, in turn, loosely based on Luke, with some material taken direct from Mark. Matthew and Luke also share a second source for sayings material attributed to Jesus, now known as the hypothetical 'Q' document. The earliest demonstrable sources for the teachings of Jesus are therefore Mark and Q.
Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that Mark seems to depend on traditions (and perhaps already shaped sources) received in Greek, a conclusion that does not encourage a belief that the gospel account was a literally accurate record of the teachings and mission of Jesus, received from a reliable source. Brown goes on to say that parallels have been detected between Mark and Paul's letter to the Romans, suggesting that at least some of the gospel material was derived from things Paul had said, not Jesus. Other parallels have been found to Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians. Perhaps some of Jesus genuine teachings can be found in the Q Gospel.
John Dominic Crossan (The Birth of Christianity) says that analysis of Q and the Gospel of Thomas point to a Common Sayings Source, from which a small amount of the material in Mark also seems to have been sourced. Strangely, this seems to have been written in Greek, so it would hardly have been the memoirs of any of the apostles, who would have written in Aramaic if they wrote at all. If indeed the Common Sayings Source was based on the teachings of Christ, there should be an even earlier Aramaic source for the teachings of Jesus, but we can not even speculate who might have written this or whose account it contained.
