In 1912, the British ocean liner RMS Titanic, on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic, struck an iceberg at night and sank, leading to the deaths of 1517 of the 2223 persons aboard her. While touted by some as "unsinkable", the ship received damage that buckled its hull to an extent the designers had not foreseen.
Captain Smith had her go through an iceberg field at high speed to try and get the ship to New York in record timing in accordance with the wishes of Bruce Ismay the chair of the White Star Line to whom the Titanic belonged.
However on 14th April 1912 it was an unusually dark night and the sea was also unusually calm (not even so much as ripples on the water according to eye witness accounts). Naturally this made it difficult to see the icebergs and by the time officers Fleet & Lee who were in the crow's nest noticed 'that fateful iceberg' it wasn't possible to turn the ship enough to avoid the collision, considering the speed it was travelling at the time.
At the time Captain Smith was asleep and most of the other senior officers were also away from the bridge (ship's control centre), it was mainly junior officers in control of the of Titanic. None of the junior officers had the experience or knowledge to know that the best course of action would have been to ram the ship head on into the iceberg, therefore only flooding one or two compartments allowing the ship to stay afloat.
The junior officers, as we all know, took the Titanic around the iceberg not realising that most of it was under the water and that the ship wouldn't be able to turn sufficiently to avoid it altogether so the Iceberg ended up punching lots of holes into the side of Titanic, causing five compartments to flood which was too much for the her. She would have remained afloat with compartments flooded but not five, which is what happened.
Loss of life was great due to the fact that engineers did not include enough life preservers or escape boats to accommodate the entire passenger and crew manifest.
