There is never a time when Earth is not 'casting a shadow'. The photons leaving the Sun that strike Earth are absorbed and scattered and do not continue into Space on the 'far' side of Earth, this absence of light causes Earth's shadow.

Lunar eclipses happen when the moon passes into, through and out of this shadowed area of Space.

During a Lunar Eclipse, the Earth casts a shadow on the Moon. At one point, you'll see a shadow on the moon pass over the Moon. This takes about a half an hour. The moon turns a creepy bright red color, too. This is really beautiful to watch.
