What happens if a hamster sneezes?

She just has the flu, or is allergic to something in the cage. Another reason, she might have escaped from the cage recently and a flea or tick might have hitched a ride on your hamster. Bring it to the vet for medicine.



I would check the type of bedding you are using. Ceder and pine bedding or toys are harmful to hamsters because of the oil. ESp when they pee on them. Also many hamsters now are allergic to corn. You can try cutting corn out of their diet and see if it improves.

Ask your vet or figure out why yourself!

Does it have something stuck in it's nose? See if there is a piece of grass or a splinter or something protruding from its nose. Pluck it out.

What are you using for it's bedding? If it is too powdery and dry, it may be tickling your hamster's nose. If it is pine shavings, it may be reacting to the pine resins. It might just be allergic to the bedding. As a last resort, hamsters can be happy with pea gravel on the floor of their cage. It has the added benefit that it can be washed, dried, and re-used (must be dry when placed in cage).

What are you feeding it? It might be allergic to something you are feeding it. Drop back to basic hamster feed pellets and wait a couple of weeks. If the sneezing goes away. Then include one of the special treats you have been providing like a bit of raw carrot and see what happens over the course of a few weeks. If nothing happens, then add another, and wait a couple of weeks.

Is your hamster a little male being kept near a big male? If so, your little guy may be under severe stress because it cannot get away from the big guy. Repeated sneezing may be the only way the hamster has to show you it is in trouble. A little hamster male kept too near to a large hamster male will die of stress! Separate the cages and see what happens.

If your hamster is sneezing all the time it may mean that it is allergic to its bedding. Hamsters are also allergic to cedar wood. The best type of bedding are paper strips which you can buy from your local petstore. (Do not use newspaper strips as the ink may be poisonous to them). Cotton is nice for them but they can apparently in some cases choke on the cotton. Wood shavings are also best bought from the petstore. Another reason a hamster sneezes a lot is that it is sick. After changing the bedding and the hamster still sneezes, bring them to the vet!
