What happens when a jury gets into a deadlock depends on the law of the country concerned. In the United States a deadlocked jury results in a mistrial and the case will, possibly, have to be retried. Things are a little easier in England and Wales as the judge can accept a majority verdict of 10-2. If this cannot be achieved the case will most likely be retried. These a just a couple of examples of what can happen with a deadlocked jury but this will vary depending on the country that is trying the case.
A deadlocked jury is one that cannot come to a final agreement on a verdict. If they remain deadlocked, it is declared a mistrial.
A hung jury.

A hung jury occurs when the jurors in a trial are unable to reach a unanimous decision on the defendant's guilt or innocence. This means that the jury is deadlocked and cannot come to a consensus. A hung jury does not always result in an acquittal, as the case may be retried with a new jury.
If the jury in a murder trial cannot reach a unanimous verdict, it results in a hung jury. This means that the jury is deadlocked and unable to come to a consensus on the defendant's guilt or innocence. In such cases, the judge may declare a mistrial, and the prosecution may choose to retry the case with a new jury or drop the charges altogether. The decision to pursue a retrial depends on various factors, including the strength of the evidence and the specifics of the case.
The pronoun "they" is a plural pronoun which is sometimes used with a singular antecedent. For example, the noun 'jury' is a singular noun, a word for one group of people. Although it is grammatically incorrect to use the plural pronoun 'they' to take the place of a singular noun, it is a very common usage because of the imagery of the people of the jury, or the players on a team, the cows in a herd, etc.Example:The jury could not agree on a verdict. It was deadlocked. (correct)The jury could not agree on a verdict. They were deadlocked. (incorrect but more common)
A jury's claim of being deadlocked, or 'hung,' is virtually never accepted on first occurrence. The judge will re-instruct the jurors on the point(s) of law they should be considering and send them back for more deliberation. Added: In the event that the Jury is not able to reach a verdict and the judge is convinced that no further deliberation will be successful, the court will eventually be forced to declare a mistrial.
That is known as a "Deadlocked" or a "Hung Jury." The judge will usually reiterate his instructions to the jury - instruct them in the applicable portions of the law - and send them back to deliberate further. In the final analysis if the jury remains deadlocked a "mis-trial" will be declared. And a new trial will be scheduled.
The McMartin Preschool trial was the longest in United States history. It lasted seven years. There were allegations of child abuse and allegations that a tunnel was found where the abuse occurred. In the first trial, the defendants were acquitted on 52 counts. The jury was deadlocked on 13 counts. In the second trial, the jury was deadlocked on all 8 counts and the judge declared a mistrial. To this day, what happened has been highly contested by those that believe in the guilt or the innocence of the defendants.
