The kidneys remove toxins and waste products from the blood. When that stops, external filters are needed. Without your kidneys functioning, the toxins would continue to build up in your body; and you would eventually die within a matter of days. As a result of those toxins, a condition known as jaundice occurs, marked by a distinct yellowing of the eyes, skin and fingernails.

The short-term treatment would be kidney dialysis. A dialysis machine acts in place of the failing kidneys, and although it is inconvenient to use, it can prolong life for many years.

The long-term solution is a kidney transplant. Even after a successful kidney transplant, the recipient will still have to take anti-rejection drugs for the remainder of the patient's life.
You have two kidneys if one fails and the other is ok then you can live with one kidney. If both kidneys fail then you will need to do dialysis or have a kidney transplant otherwise you will die

Renal Failure is a term used to describe a state where somebody's kidneys are not working at a 100% capacity. If this failure is temporary, people can re-gain kidney function. These people can survive with only a fraction of full working kidneys for many years. If the failure is bad, its called end stage renal failure. If this occurs, patients has to be placed on dialysis. Dialysis is a procedure that patients with inadequate renal function must undergo 3 times per week to rid their body from waste products that the kidneys would normally get rid of. When the Renal system fails urea (waste amino acids) builds up in the blood stream, this will eventually kill the animal or human. The blood may also become diluted as excess water will not be expelled. One disorder which will cause kidney failure is Chronic Kidney Disease. The two options for treating kidney failure are either Dialysis or a Transplant.

The kidneys remove toxins from your blood, so if they fail, you basically are poisoned by your own waste products. You also fill up with water because the kidneys remove excess water from the body. It's not a pretty way to die.

You will not be able to clean your blood of waste products and you will become ill and may die unless you can get a kidney transplant or dialysis.

Can a person live without their kidney?

No it is not possible, yes in ESR stage some people are living. End-stage renal disease is where a persons' kidney function is too low to adequately support life without support, around 10% or less of normal function. Obviously without either kidney there will be no function.
