Inside the barrel the bullet will bounce around, not coming out straight. You'd be lucky to hit anything. And if you did hit something, there would be significantly less damage than with a larger caliber bullet.

However, hollow points, high-velocity rounds, magnum, rifle rounds, and other types of ammunition can be applied to changer the abilities of a round. For example, if a person was shot with a 9mm parabellum round and then shot with a .44 magnum round, the .44 magnum round would cause a significantly more damage to the the high velocity of the .44 magnum one.
