It is the break down of a compound by heat; heat is required to break chemical bonds in the compound and so the term 'thermal.'

-H2CO3 → H2O + CO2

Carbonic acid → Water + Carbon dioxide

(Heat applied)

-CaCO3→CaO + CO2

(Heat applied)

Calcium carbonate → Calcium oxide + Carbon dioxide

the reaction in which a single compound breaks down to give two or more simpler substances are called decomposition reaction.

there are three types of decomposition reactions

1.thermal decomposition

2.electrolytic decomposition

3.photolytic decomposition

examples:-

CaCO3 (arrow) CaO + O2

2NaCl (arrow) 2Na + Cl2

2AgCl (arrow) 2Ag + Cl2

If in a reaction 2 or more than 2 substances are obtain by decomposition of 1 substance by heating, then the reaction is called thermal decomposition reaction

For eg. CaCo3 give rise to CaO + CO2 (in this reaction lime stione is heated, calcium oxide & carbon dioxide r obtained due to decomposition reaction. Hence it is an eg. of thermal decomposition reaction.)

Thermal decomposition and decomposition temperature-is it refer to the same things?

Thermal decomposition is the process by which chemical bonds are broken in the presence of heat. Decomposition temperature is the temperature at which thermal decomposition occurs, which differs for different compounds.
