On Christmas Day, Brazilians may go to Mass. The big celebration is the night before, at the traditional Missa do Galo, which translates as 'Mass of the Rooster', because of its late start and late end. But more and more churches are offering the additional options of masses later in the day on the 25th. Those Brazilians who attend Mass on the 24th may have their traditional Christmas dinner afterwards, in the early morning hours of the 25th. Or they may hold the meal later during the day, on the 25th. The traditional meal has beers and wines for drinks. The food tends to center around roasted turkey; with chicken, and ham; and with beans, colored rice, dried and fresh fruits, mashed potatoes, and vegetables. Once Mass has been celebrated, during and after the main meal, there are big reunions of family and friends. Gifts may be opened on Christmas Eve, or on Christmas Day. Either way, family and friends either witness the actual unwrapping, or share in the show-and-tell of already unwrapped gifts, on the 25th. The weather is warm, because of Christmas Day taking place during the summer in Brazil. And so the meals, games, fun, celebrations, and activities spread from the inside out, and vice versa.
