July 14th is the national day in France. People commemorate the fall of the Bastille, an old prison-fortress in the heart of Paris, which was stormed by the people of Paris. On that day a mob marched to the Bastille, hoping to seize arms and gunpowder to defend themselves against the King's foreign regiments. The garrison fired at them, the crowd went mad and took hold of the fortress. That castle was afterwards dismantled. The 14th of July marks the beginning of the French Revolution, which led to the ousting of the monarchy and the installation of the first French Republic.
