It is when the Continental Congress finished and adopted the Declaration of Independence and declared it. Thomas Jefferson wrote it for 3 weeks in June with the help of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. It wasn't signed until August though. We celebrate July fourth as Independence Day, the day our country was born.
