Osmosis! The concentration of substances disolved in the cytoplasm is lower than the concentration of salt in salt water. The cytoplasm and the salt water are separated by the cell membrane, which is semi-permeable ie it lets water through but not dissolved substances (the membrane is also described as partially permeable or selectively permeable). So, water will pass by osmosis from the cytoplasm (the dilute solution) to the salt water (the concentrated solution), and the cell will shrink as it loses water. What happens to a cell or a nucleus when it is placed in water?

When a cell or nucleus is placed in water, they will undergo a process called osmosis. Water will move across the cell membrane to reach equilibrium, potentially causing the cell to swell and burst (lyse) if too much water enters. The nucleus may remain intact if the cell membrane protects it from the influx of water.

What happens to the cell when more water leaves the cell than enters it?

When a cell is placed in water , there is a possibilty of 2 processes to occur : 1. Exosmosis - IF the water has more osmotic concentration than the cytoplasm hypertonic medium ) 2. Endosmosis - If the water has less osmotic concentration than the cytoplasm (hypotonic medium )

What happens when a cell gains water?

When a cell gains water, it might swell up due to the increase in volume. This can exert pressure on the cell's membrane, causing it to stretch. In extreme cases, too much water influx can lead to cell lysis or bursting.

What would happen if you placed a slice of cucumber in distilled water?

If a cucumber is placed in distilled water, the water molecules will flow into the cell by osmosis. This happens because the distilled water solution has a lower osmotic pressure than the cucumber cell.

What happens to a cell if you place it in a distilled and concentrated salt solution?

If you place a cell in a distilled water solution, water will move into the cell by osmosis causing it to swell and possibly burst. In a concentrated salt solution, water will move out of the cell causing it to shrink and potentially die due to dehydration.
