Because there is no gravity in space muscles go unused. Because of the lack of use they weaken and even begin to deteriorate. Astronauts must exercise for hours daily in order to maintain there strength.
Well, if astronauts exercise regularly, they should not be affected much. If an astronaut remains inactive, the muscles break down due to the lack of effort. Lower gravity uses less strength and when the astronauts return to Earth's greater gravity, they cannot support themselves because their muscles are adapted to less gravity.
