At the end of the Giver, Gabriel is slowly dying. In the the third book of the giver series, Messenger, he is mentioned as a michievous 8 year old telling us that he did survive. And in the third section of the book Son, Gabe is about 14 and it focuses on him trying to find his mother.

Gabriel represents Jonas' wisdom and courage in the Giver. the chief elder told Jonas he didn't achieve wisdom yet. but when he ran away with Gabe he gained wisdom, and courage.
