When a substance undergoes a phase change the molecules either order themselves or disperse themselves randomly. In a solid the molecules are unable to freely move in space. In liquid form they are able to move around in the space they occupy and in gas form they can move freely in any open area. In gas state the molecules will have more kinetic energy than liquid or solid, and liquid more than solid.
The temperature will either increase or decrease depending on how fast the atoms/ molecules are moving. If the molecules speed up (liquid --> gas), then the temperature will increase. If the molecules slow down (liquid --> solid) then the temperature will decrease.
Matter exists as solids, liquids and gases. When a substance change phases, the molecules will change size coupled with the increase or decrease of heat energy.
They come closer, more ordered, e.g. in straight lines or vice versa
It changes phases. The substances molecules either speed up and expand or slow down and condense.
either absorbs or releases energy
Temperature is constant during a phase change.
Changing a substance from solid into a liquid is called a change of state or a change of phase. Melting is the name given to the change of state from a solid to a liquid.
Condensationis the change of the physical state of matter from gaseous phase into liquid phase, and is the reverse of evaporation. When the transition happens from the gaseous phase into the solid phase directly, the change is called deposition - the opposite of sublimation.
Overcome intermolecular forces
It just means that one liquid can be distinguished from another by its boiling point because it is a characteristic or property of that particular liquid.
It undergoes phase change and becomes a liquid.
The lines show where a phase changes happens to a substance -
Dissolving a substance does not involve a phase change.
It undergoes a phase change, and turns to liquid.
It undergoes a phase change, and turns to liquid.
It undergoes a phase change, such as when a solid (like frozen CO2) sublimates directly to a gas, or when water freezes to ice.
Liquid to a solid is: freezingLiquid to a gas is: condensationSolid to a liquid : is meltingGas to a liquid is: evaporation
mass - the mass does not change
Condensing is when a substance undergoes a phase transition from the gas phase to the liquid phase.
The temperature remain constant during a change of phase.
A change from gas to liquid, from solid to liquid, from liquid to gas, etc.
Condensation is the phase change in which substance change form a gas to a liquid.
