The cartridge is the entire combination of the bullet (projectile), case (shell), powder (propellent), and primer (ignition). If it is fired (ignited), the primer is hit by the firing pin of the gun and produces a very hot little explosion that starts the powder burning. The pressure created by the powder pushes the bullet out of the case and down the barrel. The bullet, as it travels through the barrel, expands slightly and that grips the grooves in the barrel (rifling) which start to guide the bullet in a spin. This spin will help to stabilize the bullet as it flies through the air. Back at the gun, the case and the ignited primer will be ejected automatically in an auto-loading type gun. If it is in a revolver type gun, the case stays in the chamber until it is unloaded from the gun.

What happens to bullets shell and casing when shot?

A cartridge consists of a cartridge case with primer, the powder filling, and the bullet (the projectile). When a cartridge is fired, the primer ignites the powder, which burns, driving the bullet out of the barrel. The now empty cartridge case may be automatically ejected from the gun (falls to the ground) or may have to be ejected by hand- depends on the gun.
