For women, the uterine lining sheds, in the physiological term of menstruation. In rabbits, nothing happens. They just keep going in and out of heat until fertilization does occur. The same goes for cows and heifers.

Why does mensuration not take place after fertilisation?

The uterine lining builds-up in preparation for fertilization so that the zygote/embryo can implant itself into the uterine lining and then develop into a baby. Menstruation only takes place when fertilization doesn't take place, this occurs so the uterine lining is shed and can start a fresh next cycle so it can be ready for pregnancy again. If the uterine lining were to break down after fertilization a zygote/embryo wouldn't be able to implant itself or it would result in miscarriage.

Does the uterus enlarge when fertilization occurs?

No, the uterus does not begin growing until after the embryo implants in the uterine lining.

How is the uterine lining is prepared for possible pregnancy?

You have the proliferative phase before the ovulation. After the ovulation you get the secretary phase. Here the glands becomes tortuous. The uterine lining becomes thick. This happens under the influence of both oestrogen and progesterone hormones.

Why does menstruation takes place?

The menstrual cycle is a series of hormonal changes in which an egg matures and is released and the uterine lining thickens so that the egg, if fertilized, can implant in it. Menstruation happens when the uterine lining sheds because no fertilized egg has implanted.

Why does your menstruation stop when a woman is pregnant?

Menstruation is what happens when a woman doesn't get pregnant - after ovulation the uterine lining builds-up in preparation for possible pregnancy, if a woman doesn't get pregnant then menstruation occurs to shed the uterine lining so it can start fresh next cycle. During pregnancy the uterine lining is busy keeping the growing embryo/fetus safe, and women no longer ovulate.

How soon after implantation do hCG levels rise?

HCG stands for "Human Chorionic Gonadotropin", the pregnancy hormone. HCG is being produced by the placenta and enters the blood stream as soon as implantation happens, about one week after fertilization and ovulation, when the embryo implants and the placenta attaches to the uterine lining.
