The boys collected wood for their fire from a pocket of jungle on the slopes of the mountain. After a while some of the littluns got bored and tired of collecting wood and picked fruit to eat. Later when the fire was lit a shower of sparks set fire to the pocket of woodland. It was only then that Piggy realised that the littlun with the mulberry coloured birthmark on his face was not around. Presumably he was killed by the smoke or the flames while picking fruit in the pocket of jungle. He was certainly never seen again.
The beast is what the littluns with the birthmark raise as a concern in "Lord of the Flies." They fear a mythical creature that they believe roams the island at night, causing them to be afraid and seek protection from the older boys.

Hope that helped :)
