Someone wrote the labia will close and the blood wont come out, this is not true. Labia's have no effect like that. You can leak. That's why women usually use tampons when they go swimming. If you are going on vacation there are pills you can get from your doctor that will stop it temporarily.

she probably wold have the water in a pool turn red. she will also havae a blood trail following her.

To person who wrote that: Not true.

Okay so here's the real answer.

1. Take an extra pad/tampon with you and some clothes.

2. Get in the pool WITHOUT a tampon on. The blood stops in water.

3. When you get out, a few minutes later blood will come out. So put on extra clothing and your pad/tampon.

Without internal menstrual products the blood will leave the body - if light this will be diluted by the water and may go unnoticed, but heavier flow and tissue may be noticed (especially upon leaving the pool). It is best that women who are menstruating use internal menstrual products to swim.

You can use any of the following to swim on your period:

  • Tampons.
  • Soft tampons.
  • Menstrual sponges.
  • Menstrual cups.
  • Diaphragms.
  • Softcups.

Blood does not stop in the water - this is a myth.
The uterus cannot tell when you are in water to know to stop shedding, your body simply doesn't work like that - sit in a shallow bath of water and you will see this yourself. With light flow what little blood leaves your body may be diluted by water, but heavier flow may be noticed and so too would uterine tissue, also once you get out of the water the blood would likely run down your leg.

Women can use options like menstrual cups or softcups to swim on their periods instead of tampons, so there are other options, but without any form of internal menstrual products blood would go into the water. Menstrual blood isn't any less hygienic than discharge, but no one wants to swim through your blood or get your uterine tissue on them, and you don't want people seeing that.

Yes, you can go swimming on your period without using a tampon.

To swim on your period you can use any of the following options:

  • Tampons
  • Soft tampons
  • Menstrual sponges
  • Menstrual cups
  • Diaphragms
  • Softcups

Menstrual cups are best because they are safer and more hygienic than tampons so pose no health risks, this means that unlike tampons cups can be worn even when your flow is light and for up to 12 hours. Menstrual cups also don't absorb water, nothing shows outside your body, they don't increase cramps as tampons can, also as they hold more plus have light suction they don't leak.

If you don't want to use internal menstrual products then you can't swim in a public pool - menstrual flow isn't any less hygienic than vaginal discharge, but no one wants to be swimming through your blood! You may swim in a private pool or natural body of water without internal menstrual products, but do bare in mind blood will still leave your body in the water and getting out of the water.
