The Earth's tectonic plates are all moving all the time - they move at about the same speed that your fingernails grow. Most of this movement, because the Earth is so large and the movement so slow, is taken up by ductile deformation (rather like squashing plasticine). However, occasionally bits of the plate crack and when this happens we get earthquakes.

It also depends on the way they clash. Sometimes when they clash they both go upward forming mountains. Sometimes one goes beneath the other and gets melted by the high temperatures down there. The melted lava goes up through the two plates and comes out to the surface, creating a volcano and erupting.

When plate tectonics move the Earth keeps getting reshaped. When life first appeared on Earth, there was one huge super continent called Pangaea, which is Greek for all lands. As time went by the tectonic plates slowly moved away from each other. The plates moved from one inch to six inches per year. Also, when plate tectonics move pressure builds up in the plates. When their is too much pressure it causes an earth quake, ehich even further shapes the Earth. Their are other ways that the Earth is shaped. When plates move, they run over hot spots, which erupt and form a volcano. Volcanoes can happen at all three of the different types of boundaries, divergant, convergant and transform boundaries. Transform boundaries slide past each other, so if a road, railroad track and a river were all next to each other, part of the road would be on the railroad track, and part of the railroad track would be next to the river. An example of this fault is San Andreas Fault. Divergant boundaries are when two plates are moving away from each other. There is a hot spot in between them and as they move apart the hot spot erupts and forms more land. This is happening in the African Rift Valley. Convergant boundaries are when one plate is being pushed under the other. The land that is being pushed under melts. As one of the plates is being pushed under, mountains form. The Alps were formed this way.

Thinning of the crust occurs at points on the Earth's surface where tectonic plates are separating. This initially causes normal faulting to occur which leads to the creation of down thrown blocks or valleys known as "grabens". These are bounded on either side by "horst" structures.

If the separation of the plates continues, then a rift valley will form, along with associated thinning of the lithosphere and the onset of volcanism. Continued riftying will ultimately form a new oceanic spreading centre.

This process is currently occurring in the East African Rift zone.

When the earth moves, it's because of tectonic plates. They can cause earthquakes. The earthquakes can spilt apart, when they do. The old rocks fall into the gap. Magma from between the rocks will come up and burn any rocks. Hope this was helpful!

A few centimeters a year.

What are plate tectonics and what does it have to do with the earths shape?

Plate tectonics are what each continent is on. They move and are continuing to move today. It has to do with the earth's shape because the plate tectonics move the continents around.

they shake and crack it.

Movement of the crustal plate?

When the crustal plate moves it vibrates the earths crust and its plates. When the crust and plates are forced to move it can result in volcanic action.

Plate tectonics.

Did the earths continent shift?

Yes, the Earth's continents have shifted over millions of years due to plate tectonics. This movement has resulted in the formation of supercontinents, such as Pangaea, which eventually broke apart to form the continents we see today.
