There are two main processes going on. The first one is absorption which causes drop in the original intensity. The second one is scattering and it has more complicated mechanism. Scattering causes change of light frequency: the incident light frequency is usually higher than for the scattered light frequency (an exception is anti-Stokes Raman scattering), defocusing the beam, change in the bean direction.

- It slows down very very slightly; the speed of light in through air is about 99.97% the speed of light in a vacuum, or about 186,210 mi/sec. This is, however, enough to cause stars to apparently twinkle as the light bends and refracts.
- Certain wavelengths (most notably, much of the high-energy electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet and X-rays) are absorbed by molecules in the air itself, including water vapor, carbon dioxide and ozone.
