Since solar eclipses go by quickly, people stare too long and because their pupils are large too let in more light because of the darkness, the sun comes back quickly and all that light goes into your big pupil before it has the chance to get smaller, therefore your retina pretty much gets burned out.

First off, you shouldn't stare at a solar eclipse at all, not even with sunglasses. This is because during an eclipse, the sun's UV rays are brighter and stronger than normal. During a solar eclipse, it becomes darker because the moon has moved in front of the sun, and therefore our pupils (the black part of our eyes) becomes bigger to let in as much light as possible during the eclipse. While your pupils are adjusting, though, they are also taking in much more of the UV rays with can permanently damage your eyes and even cause total blindness; the rays burn the cells in your eyes - located in the retina - that help you see.

So, to put it simply, staring at a solar eclipse can make you go blind, and if not it can still cause severe and permanent damage to your eyes.

If you look at a solar eclipse that is not at totality without adequate protection, the intense rays from the sun can harm your eyes.
