When you first arrive at the jail after being arrested, you will go through booking. You'll be printed, photographed, searched, etc. You will then be placed in a holding cell while you await assignment to a location. If you are charged with a misdemeanor, your bond may be set immediately and you may be able to be bonded out right away. For some charges, you may be released on a signature bond. Otherwise, you will be held until bond is set. You will probably be able to make phone calls at this time. You will probably be brought in for first appearance within the first day or two.

If you get this far without being bonded out, you will then be assigned to a more permanent location. Once you arrive in that location, you will sit and wait, or be assigned work duty, or watch television, or sleep, or read.
