When we split atoms, we liberate tremendous quantities of energy. And, because of the way we do it, the lion's share of the energy released is heat, which we usually use to generate steam. We then operate a conventional steam powered electric generating plant using the reactor, where we split the atoms in controlled fission, as the heat source.
The actual nuclear reaction would not be affected at all by being in space. The after effects of a nuclear explosion would be different-there would be no blast waves for example because there is no medium to carry them, but the fission fragments would be ejected and travel a long way because of lack of resistance, and the radiation effects would be just as severe, perhaps more so without any atmosphere to attenuate them.
An atom will release energy in terms of nuclear fission in Elements.

Albert Einstein did not split the atom. He did work that predicted what would happen when an atom was split, among many other things.
The fast neutron chain reaction triggers multiple fissions at an exponentially increasing rate. This happens so rapidly that all the fissions needed to release the energy for the explosion have split in an interval of time on the order of 10 microseconds.
Ernest Rutherford was the New-Zealand physicist who "split the atom". Please see the related links for details.
The thing that takes up the most space of an atom at about 99.99% of the size of the atom is empty space. The majority of the remaining 0.01% is found in the nucleus and about 0.00001% of the atom is taken by the electrons.

A nuclear chain reaction. This is what happens in a nuclear reactor.
