What is this big red bump on the back of the hamster's leg?

If he fell, and then you found a red spot on his back, he may have internal bleeding and this is a sign of the bleeding on the inside. If you think that maybe he bruised himself on his wheel, or on tubes or whatever, then its probably just a bruise. But if none of this has happened, then its just a spot, keep him warm and conforted as its probably nothing to him but give him your usual love :)

This may not be the case, but I had the same problem with one of my hamsters. It turned out that it was actually the intestines of the hamsters which had come out. The most sensible thing to do in this situation would be to see a vet, who can decide what is wrong with the hamster and what needs to be done about it. It is important not to leave the hamster in pain for a long time.

Hamsters mucus is red, so when there eyes go red it is due to one or more of these reasons:

1. They are stressed (they are scared, or fighting with cage-mate)

2. They are ill

3. They are allergic to their bedding

4. They are old

You can get rid of this mucus by changing the type of bedding you use, separate fighting hamsters and taking them to a vet.

To clean it off you hold the hamster wit one hand and use the other to clean the mucus off with cotton wool soaked in cooled boiled water. You must boil the water to destroy any germs in the water or on the wool.

A red swelling in soft tissue generally indicates inflammation - your hamster may have an abscess, a wound or an infection there. Less common in younger hamsters, but more common in older, would be a tumor or cancer. Your veterinarian can examine your hamster and figure out what exactly is causing this, as well as recommend treatment options.

If its skinless, the hampster would have probably got a rash or rubbed it on something. But if its furry, its either just part of the coat or somed spilled ketchup on your hampsters leg.
