If both the mother and father are RH negative than their child will be RH negative as well. This is good because there is no risk of the mother developing antibodies to the child's blood. This occurs when the blood of an RH negative mother mixes with the blood of her RH positive baby. The mothers body treats the foreign blood like an invader and creates antibodies to attack and isolate the cells. This can occur when the placenta detaches during childbirth, miscarriage, abortion and some prenatal testing procedures. Usually the mother will have her first child successfully with no harm but if not treated with the ROGAM shot afterwards she will have trouble carrying further RH positive babies. This can all be prevented by getting typed at the time of first pregnancy so the shot can be administered and after the birth it will be administered again.

The possible side effects of Rhogam are like most vaccinations. If rhogam is given unnecessarily because both parents are Rh negative, there are no repercussions other than the side effects you would normally experience. I think sometimes they give it as a "just in case". There is a lot more infidelity than there used to be. Also, many people have been given incorrect information about their blood type. So depending on where you are getting the information about the father's blood type, they probably don't want to take anyone's word for it when a baby's well being is on the line.
