What hardships did the farmers face on the plains?
The farmers on the plains faced water shortages, heat and strong winds. They hard to till rock hard soil. Dust storms removed the topsoil, leaving them with infertile clay.
Some of the hardships that farmers had to face were railroads charging excessive prices for farmers in the West to ship/store crops than those in the East, the price of crops was decreasing, and farmers had to mortgage their land to buy more property, which the banks would foreclose. It can cause farmers to go out of business, go bankrupt, or simply up and quit. Less revenue is coming in to these local communities because of the hardships the farmers face due to the BSE outbreaks, and there is also emotional strain on relationships and such. BSE has even caused some people to commit suicide.
