Both are needed.
Aircraft carriers are not held in place very well with one anchor.
A ship is held in position by the weight of the chain laying on the bottom. The anchor is used to grab on the bottom when laying anchor. After the anchor is down, several lengths of chain is paid out. The weight of the chain is what holds the ship. The circumstances determine how much chain is needed and which type of anchor to use. Therefore they don't BOTH need to be very long.

SR-71 holds the record for the fastest manned jet aircraft. The officail maximum airspeed achieved by the plane is near Mach3.5. Unfortunately it is only a spy plane or surveillance aircraft.
An anchor is heavy object that holds a boat in place and keeps it from drifting. Can also be a metaphor for something or someone that provides confidence, reassurance or stability.
The first jet plane landed on an aircraft carrier 6 November 1945. The plane was a US Navy Ryan FR-1 Fireball piloted by Ensign Jake C. West, and the carrier was the Casablanca-class escort carrier USS Wake Island. The FR-1 was a 'composite' aircraft with both a forward radial engine and a rear turbojet. It was intended to take off and land using the radial engine, as early jet engines were poorly suited to carrier operations. However, Ensign West's FR-1 suffered a radial engine failure on approach; however, he was able to start the turbojet and make a successful emergency landing.
