Anne - and everyone else in the annex - had to be completely quiet from the time the workmen arrived in the morning until they left for the day in late afternoon. They did get as respite for an hour or so at noon, as none of the workmen ate lunch on premises.

Anne Frank, along with the other residents in the Secret Annex, had to remain silent during the day to avoid detection by the workers in the building. They were not permitted to make noise or move around to avoid raising suspicions.
