Karl Marx had more than one idea. Perhaps his most famous was "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs".

Without a doubt, Marx's "Idea" is what he called "Dialectical Materialism." This means that the mode of production (the materialistic part) in place at any one time in history creates the economic and political system. Other forces, such as sociological ones, play a part, but are not as important as the materialistic force. As an example, as the mode of production changed from agrarian to industrial, the type of society went from feudal to capitalist. Note that the term "mode of production" is to be distinguished from the term "means of production" in Marxian theory.

The phrase referred to above was what, in his opinion, the motto of a true communist society would be. So far we have not ever seen a true communist society in all of recorded history.
