It is estimated that one mouthful in every three you eat are there as the direct result of pollination by bees. If we were to lose them we would lose most top fruit (apples, Pears, cherries, and so on), most nuts, a large proportion of vegetables and a lot of flower species. The one major food crop to be unaffected would be cereals because as they are basically grasses they are wind pollinated. However, you may not mind living on a diet of bread and porridge but I prefer a bigger selection.

If bees had never existed, it is almost certain some other species would have taken up the task of pollinating plants in return for nectar at some time in pre-history.
