Yes it is a fever. It's a mild fever.

99.0-99.5 RANGE: SLIGHT - Continue normal activities with caution.

99.6-101.9 RANGE: MILD - take little action, stay at home, sleep and rest.

102.0-102.9 RANGE: MODERATE- drink lots of fluids (at room temp of 72), sleep and rest, don't use fever reducers yet.

103.0-104.9 RANGE: SEVERE - get to a doctor, use fever reducers sparingly (keep temp between 100-102 degrees to fight off your illness), get lots and lots of rest, eat lots of food to ensure the digestive system is still functioning normally!

105.0-106.6 RANGE: DANGER- call 911, get immediate medical attention.

106.7+: LIFE-THREATENING- death or coma is possible, dial 911, and get medical attention right away. Hyperpyrexia causes fevers this high.

The normal body temperature for the 'average' human is 98.6, but everyone is different. Some people have normal temps above 99, some below 98. It is rare for people to be below 97 or above 100 unless the body is going through some sort of trauma.

Relax though, your temp can lower due to lack of sleep, food, or many other things. Being at 96 doesn't neccessarily mean you are in trouble. However, if you know your body temperature is normally around the 98.6 average, then a temperature of 96 can be a warning sign. If you temperature has dropped that much and you are not feeling well, then go to the doctor.

For older people especially, 96 degrees is something you should take extreme precautions on. The worst thing you can do is risk playing doctor yourself to save a few minutes of time or a little bit of money. It's not worth it.

Last but not least, hypothermia can start to set in at 95 degrees. So if your temperature keeps dropping, don't sit there googling for advice .. have someone take you to the doctor.

Is 98.3 bad when youre sick?

Absolutely not! The AVERAGE human temperature is 98.6F. This number is of a bunch of human temperatures compiled into 1 number; which means some numbers were higher, some lower. However, if your temperature dips below 97 or above 104, I'd see a doctor.
