The data that is usually stored on a barcode is :

Where the product has come from

Who Manufactured the product

Date Purchased

Additional Note: it depends on the barcode. Some of the 2 dimensional bar codes are free text formatted so anything can appear as the content. QR Bar codes, for example, use a URL reference to a web site for content. PDF417 and other bar codes have text in them - some states use them on the back of the driver's license to contain the content of the license.

That depends on the actual barcode. The standard UPC-A barcode contains a 6 digit manufacturer ID and a 6 digit product ID, but the shorter UPC-E barcode compresses that information into just 6 digits by leaving out trailing zeros of the manufacturer ID and leading zeros of the product ID.

Other barcodes contain different information.

The bar code identifies the item or product. The data base in the computer server that is used by a vendor can store a lot of additional information about that item in addition to just a description of the product (a 12 oz can of chicken noodle soup) and a manufacturers brand name (Campbell's). The merchant adds a price ($0.89). He may add a sale incentive (quantity 4 for $2.99) or any other data he wishes.

Barcode reader reads the information that is stored in the barcode. For example: a barcode may have a product SKU and an expiry date. The barcode reader will read those numbers. There are several types of barcodes and not all readers can read all barcodes.

What information is in a bar code?

A bar code is used to identify a product or item. That's all. Other information associated with that bar code is held on the computer server that is linked to the bar code scanner. That other information could include what the item is, its price, brand, size/weight, and many other particulars. The scanner is able to identify the item, and once the bar code has been used for that, the computer server does the rest.

What does bar code scanner mean?

What a bar code reader is requires an understanding of the amount of information contained in the Bar code itself. Simply the amount of information is huge. All a reader will do is use a LASER beam to collect or read the bar code and transfer the information into a computer.
